As morning’s first light broke the morning of October 7, 2016, the destructive winds of Hurricane Matthew were already roaring along the coast of Flagler County. By day’s end, portions of the historic Flagler Beach Pier, a mile-and-a-half stretch of State Route A1A and the lives of millions along the Atlantic Coast would be destroyed.

But after the storm waters calmed, a ray of hope would shine bright as one Matanzas High School junior would discover his life’s purpose.

Now six years later, 22-year-old Tanner Hyers has turned his passion to protect his neighbors, family and friends into his mission. On July 5, he will see his dream come full circle as he opens Brightway, The Hyers Agency in Palm Coast.

“After Matthew had passed, I went with some friends to the coast to see the damage,” Hyers said. “It didn’t take long, though, to realize we needed to do something. We needed to do our part. I remember we would go into flooded homes and just salvage everything we could for families, taking their belongings to nearby higher ground to dry. It was the worst day of their lives. However, I was honored by the opportunity to lend a helping hand.”

While working in the hospitality industry for the past four years, Hyers never lost sight of his passion. Taking part in public events hosted by Flagler Strong, a volunteer network committed to disaster relief in Flagler County, Hyers would attend and teach his neighbors about the importance of hurricane awareness and flood insurance. “People know they need it, but many don’t realize they are currently without it,” Hyers said. “When a homeowner here finds out it’s not part of their insurance policy, it’s a shocker for them.”

Hyers’ story makes perfect sense when you learn that his mother is a teacher and his father works in the insurance industry, as well. “Now, I’ve been in homes the day after storms. I’m proud to be able to help them in their time of need. It’s an even bigger joy to help them prepare before the worst happens,” Hyers added.
