Like thousands of Lone Star State moms, Magnolia’s Alison Terry put her life on hold for her family more than thirty years ago. But starting this Monday, the 52-year-old mother of six will open the doors to her future in Conroe. Next week will see the launch of her Brightway, The Alison Terry Agency insurance office.

After graduating from Athens High School in 1989, the Montgomery County resident immediately began her college education. However, with plans of working in the medical field, the demands of her potential career were too taxing on a young family. “Working 12-hour shifts as part of the nursing program curriculum, and having kids, was just too much,” Terry recalled. Today, nearly 50 percent of college students who are mothers withdraw from college without earning a degree.

So, six children and three decades later, the Athens, Texas native found her way back into the classroom. In 2020, Terry earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Texas College in Tyler.

“It was time for me to set myself up for a future career,” Terry said.

And when it comes to business in the Greater Houston area, the Terry name is quickly becoming synonymous with entrepreneurial success. Terry’s husband owns the Terry Auto Group which currently has five different dealerships in the state and two in Arkansas. It was that connection that gave this family’s story its latest chapter.

With the assistance of her daughter and sister-in-law, her Brightway agency will have the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with new car owners. “One of my daughters was previously working at a dealership selling insurance,” Terry added.  “And, with the auto industry already a big part of the family, it only made sense to work with new car buyers in educating them on all of the options to choose from.”

A part of the job that rings true with Terry given her childhood dreams. “Growing up in Athens, I always wanted to be a teacher,” Terry said. “I had a neighbor, Mrs. Glaspie, who was a lifelong elementary teacher. She was someone who taught everyone she came in contact with a little something about life. She would get out papers and pencils and help the kids in the neighborhood play school. Everything was a learning opportunity.”

Although Mrs. Glaspie passed away this past year, that spirit of educating those in need is alive and well in Terry’s new agency. “Insurance can be confusing. But, if you are shown the ropes, it’s a win-win situation for the customer and the company.”
