A child of the Caribbean, Marlon Hamilton has always had a heart for those in need. Next Monday, the Locust Grove businessman will be unveiling his American Dream. One that will play a role in helping others in Middle Georgia as he officially launches his hometown effort to truly practice what his family preaches.

At just nine years old, Hamilton and his family moved to the States from Jamaica, his island home. “I still remember seeing my first snowflakes on our first day in America,” Hamilton recalled of his family’s initial move to Massachusetts. Nearly forty years later, this Jamaican-born entrepreneur will open the doors on Brightway, The Marlon Hamilton Agency insurance agency serving those here in the Peach State.

Recently, Marlon and his wife, Tracy, one of the ministers at their church, Tabernacle of Praise Church International (TOPCI) in McDonough, spent 10 days helping provide services to those living in squatters’ camps in South Africa. The mission trip coordinated by TOPCI spent days of service in the camps in Soweta, Kliptown and Eloff, South Africa. “Getting to help people in need is something that truly plays to our strengths,” Hamilton added. “We served on different teams handling things like construction, as well as feeding and caring for the children and the elderly.”

Today, more than four million of South Africa’s 60 million residents live in makeshift shacks, usually located in squatter camps. Remembering their roots, the Hamiltons’ perspective makes living lives of service almost second nature. As of 2021, more than 10 million of the Caribbean Islands’ 44 million residents were living in poverty. Here at home, more than 17 percent of Georgians currently live at or below the poverty level.

Tracy, also a native of the Caribbean (Barbados), will be teaming up with her husband in his Pine Grove Road venture. Both with well-established careers in the insurance and housing industries, the Hamiltons are “partners” in every sense of the word.

“We are partners in Christ, life and business,” Hamilton said. “We’ve been raised to serve. Getting the chance to work together to help neighbors in our counties is something we are truly built for.”

First meeting in high school in Massachusetts, Marlon and Tracy don’t forget where they came from. Parents of three adult children and graduates of North High School in Worcester, Massachusetts, the Hamiltons have now spent more than a decade practicing what they preach right here in Georgia.
