Growing up in the Dominican Republic, Victor Encarnacion loved the game of baseball. However, his father made sure his focus stayed on his studies and the Warwick, Rhode Island resident would discover his other passion within the world of finance.

Next week, the 38-year-old Ocean State business pro will see his dream take flight when he launches his Brightway, The Encarnacion Family insurance agency. However, the new Broad Street business is only part of the dream as he is helping Providence youth also stay focused on their futures.

With his passion for numbers and doing what’s right, Encarnacion has spent much of his career serving as a securities examiner for the State of Rhode Island. “Now being able to practice what I’ve preached through my new business is an exciting opportunity,” Encarnacion said of his new agency.

“Coming to the U.S. as a young child, you quickly see that everyone came to this country from somewhere else at some point in time. And whenever they came, they came chasing a dream. This one is mine.”

But it’s not only his new business in the world of insurance. Today, the father of two still has a passion for business and finance, as well as the world of sports.

“My dad really helped me stay focused when I was young. However, since I still had a passion for athletics, I really wanted to find a way to help our aspiring athletes by teaching them in ways that would help them grow as young men and women,” Encarnacion said. “My sister actually helped me make the connection and I began teaching students the basics of financing and budgeting.”

Through a partnership with the Providence Sports and Leadership program, Encarnacion has been teaching financial literacy workshops to student-athletes on a monthly basis. From balancing a checkbook to financing a home to learning about investing and saving, the Johnson and Wales University alum is helping students prepare for life beyond the ball fields.

Most recently, his latest class of 15 student-athletes graduated from his financial literacy workshops. The program has caught the attention of many in the area including Providence Mayor Brett Smiley who attended the special graduation event last week. “Being able to do something that will make a lasting difference here in Providence is special to me,” Encarnacion added. “This country has afforded me opportunities I would’ve never dreamed of as a young child in the Dominican Republic. Now, I’m excited to truly be a part of the next generation of Americans.”

The 2003 graduate of Hope High School in Providence currently resides in Warwick with his wife, Clarisa, and their two children, Victor, Jr. and Valerie.
